Is Bob Corker uncorking a bottle of truth serum for fellow Republicans or just a single shot energy drink for himself?
The public feud between Donald Trump and senior Republican Senator Bob Corker may be entertaining, particularly Corker’s tweet about the White House being an adult day care center. However, it would be a lot funnier if it weren’t so alarmingly accurate and referring to the president of the United States! It is certainly very refreshing to finally hear in public an honest assessment of the situation from a Republican senator, particularly one in such a senior position. Yet it is unfortunate that only a politician not running for reelection, and therefore immune to Trump’s threats & intimidation, has the balls to admit that the emperor has no clothes! It is also hypocritical, in that Corker has previously been a staunch and early Trump supporter, and it is not as if Trump has changed his behavior since he was a candidate. It is obvious that, as Corker says, Trump treats the presidency like a reality show, and has yet to demonstrate adequate competence for governing. He also calls out Trump for his incessant lying and correctly pegs Trump’s threats toward other countries as reckless, with only a few key cabinet secretaries and chief of staff acting as a barrier to chaos! These opinions are reportedly shared by the large majority of other Republican and presumably Democratic senators. It is unfortunate, although understandable, that most of the other Republicans who do face reelection sooner or later are too cowardly and selfish to be honest in public about these issues, since Trump is still more popular with his base than are congressional Republicans. The continuing question is: what if anything will change that conspiracy of silence? It is likely that congressional Republicans will get more of the blame from Republican voters than will Trump for the predictable failure of Trump’s major legislative agenda items, despite his woeful lack of leadership. Some scenarios which might spark a congressional Republican revolt include: war with North Korea or other countries, resignation of multiple key cabinet members with resultant increased chaos within the executive branch, a major scandal involving Trump himself or clear evidence of obstruction of justice from Mueller’s investigation. Or, maybe there is just nothing that will convince a bunch of self-serving politicians to publicly call a spade a spade if that spade can be used to dig them into a hole!
